Modern hearing aids in 2026: AI, Bluetooth and rechargeable batteries
By Jann Clausen · approx. 4 min read · April 13, 2026

In short
A hearing aid from 2026 weighs a few grams. It recognises by itself whether you are in the living room or at the market, handles calls with your phone and charges overnight in a small box. Not everyone needs every function. What counts for you, you hear while trial wearing.
What has changed
Many people still picture a hearing aid from the eighties: a beige box behind the ear that whistles as soon as someone comes too close. The device we fit today has nothing in common with that. It hides behind the outer ear or in the ear canal, and it computes more than the first home computer did. Here is what the current state of the art is, and which of it makes a difference in your daily life.
Automatic programs: the device recognises where you are
A modern hearing aid measures what is happening around you several hundred times per second. Are you sitting in a quiet living room, standing at the weekly market in Glückstadt or driving along a country road with the window open? The device recognises the situation and switches over, without you pressing a button. The manufacturers give it different names: Signia speaks of "Augmented Xperience", Oticon of "BrainHearing", Phonak of "AutoSense". They all mean the same thing: speech to the front, background noise to the back.
Some devices learn. If you regularly turn the volume down in a restaurant, the device remembers and does it by itself next time.
Your own voice
An old complaint: with a hearing aid, your own voice sounds hollow, as if you were speaking into a bucket. Signia developed "Own Voice Processing" for this. The device recognises your voice and processes it separately from the surroundings. Other manufacturers have similar solutions. Whether it sounds natural to you, you hear in the first minute of trial wearing.
Bluetooth: phone, television, music
Hearing aids from 2026 are Bluetooth devices. In daily life that means:
- Phone calls: the call goes straight into both hearing aids. The phone stays in your pocket.
- Television: a small TV streamer sends the television sound to your devices, at your volume. The family hears the television normally.
- Music and podcasts: the hearing aid becomes your headphones.
- App: you set volume, programs and direction on your phone, discreetly under the table.
Phonak goes one step further with "Roger": a microphone sits with the speaker, on the lectern or in the middle of the regulars' table, and transmits the voice straight into your ear. For talks, meetings and large groups it is the biggest leap we know.
Bluetooth is not available in every technology class. The overview on our pricing page shows from which class it is included.
Rechargeable battery instead of button cells
The trend is towards the lithium-ion rechargeable battery, and for many of our customers it is the most noticeable step forward:
| Rechargeable | Button cell | |
|---|---|---|
| Running time | one day, streaming included | 3 to 14 days, depending on size |
| Handling | into the charging box in the evening | change the button cell |
| Running costs | none | around 50 to 80 € per year |
| On the go | take the charging box along | spare cells in your pocket |
| Fine motor skills | nothing to fiddle with | small cells to grip |
If your eyesight is poor or your fingers are unsteady, the rechargeable battery is easier: device into the box in the evening, out in the morning, done. Battery devices still have their place, for example when travelling without a socket or for anyone who does not want to charge anything. In our subscription, batteries are included in the price.
Water, dust, sweat
Most current devices are protected to IP68: sealed against dust and a short rain shower, unaffected by sweat when cycling. You still take them out to shower or swim, and at night they belong in the drying box. Moisture remains the most common cause of failures.
Size and appearance
A receiver-in-canal device is so slim today that it is barely visible behind the outer ear. In-the-ear devices disappear into the ear canal. If you like, you can wear your hearing aid in silver, blue or red instead of skin colour. How small it can be depends on your hearing loss: very small devices have less room for battery and microphones.
Which of it do you need?
Not all of it. If you mainly watch television at home and talk with your family, you do not need a Roger transmitter. If you are out and about at your club, at work and in restaurants, every level of automation helps. That is exactly what we clarify during the hearing test. Then we set two devices to your hearing and give them to you to take home.
